Closet of Confusion

imageAt this point in the depths of February in Iowa, we expect to be dragging our weary feet through day after day of blizzardy snow and icy cold temperatures.

This year is different.  And we don’t quite know what to do with it.

Some days are pretty chilly.  Kids arrive at school in winter coats, wrapped in scarves and wearing their mittens.

And some days are sunny, breezy, and delightfully springlike!  When we hit 70 degrees last week, kids gleefully arrived in shorts and flip flops.  The day after that—they came back in winter coats.

It means that getting ready for recess is completely confusing!

After a few days of this baffling weather, I examined my line of second graders to see one of my quiet, serious little fellows standing very still, shaking his head.  He stood in his long, heavy winter coat surveying his chattering classmates in their t-shirts, shorts, and sunglasses.  He looked at me and said, “I just don’t know what to do…”

So true.

It’s been in the sixties and seventies for over a week in Denver, and we are confused too. I do recess duty with middle schoolers and they are never dressed appropriately– either they are freezing because they don’t have coats, or I am having to remind everyone to go back and get their coats because they left them strewn all over the playground. Crazy!
